Since 1980, Jerry Lancing and his college friends have shared a unique bond forged on the rugged paths of the wilderness. Over 25 trips together, they have covered many different trails together. Their annual August backpacking tradition offers a glimpse into enduring friendship, tough trail conditions, and the simple joy of sleeping under the stars.

The Beginning of a Lifelong Tradition

Jerry and his college buddies started backpacking together around 1980 in college.. What began as a casual adventure quickly became a cherished ritual. Many times, they return to the trails together and this time it was the Wilderness of Maine, a remote stretch of the Appalachian Trail known for its dense forests, rocky terrain, and limited access points.

The group’s commitment to this tradition is impressive. Over 25 trips, they have navigated the different challenges, including steep climbs, unpredictable weather, and the physical demands of carrying all their gear. Their experience has taught them how to prepare for the wilderness and rely on each other in tough situations.

Navigating the Wilderness of Maine

The Wilderness of Maine section of the Appalachian Trail is one of the most isolated parts of the entire route. It offers a true backcountry experience with minimal human contact and few facilities. Jerry and his friends embrace this isolation, finding peace in the quiet and beauty in the untouched landscape.

One key aspect of their trips is the use of three-sided shelters for overnight stays. These shelters provide basic protection from the elements while allowing the hikers to stay connected to nature. Sleeping in these shelters requires careful planning, especially since the group depends on a single food drop arranged by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. This food drop is crucial for resupplying during their multi-day hikes, as there are no nearby towns or stores.

Overcoming Tough Trail Conditions

The Appalachian Trail in this region is known for its ruggedness. The group faces rocky paths, steep ascents, and sometimes wet, muddy conditions. These challenges test their endurance and teamwork. Jerry recalls one trip where heavy rain turned the trail into a slippery mess, forcing them to slow down and support each other more than usual. Also as they have aged, they have found the use of hiking poles has been a necessity.

Despite these difficulties, the group finds satisfaction in pushing their limits. Their shared history and mutual respect make the tough moments easier to bear. They have learned to pack efficiently, choose durable gear, and maintain a steady pace to conserve energy.

The Power of Friendship on the Trail

What makes these trips truly special is the bond between Jerry and his college buddies. Backpacking together for over four decades has created a deep connection that goes beyond the trail. They share stories, laughter, and moments of quiet reflection around the campfire.

Their tradition shows how outdoor adventures can strengthen friendships and create lasting memories. The Appalachian Trail serves as a backdrop for their journey through time, reminding them of their youth and the importance of staying connected.

Looking Ahead to Future Adventures

Jerry and his friends plan to continue their backpacking tradition for as long as they can. Each trip adds a new chapter to their story and reinforces their love for the wilderness. For those interested in long-term hiking traditions, their experience offers valuable lessons:

  • Prepare thoroughly for remote and challenging trails

  • Use reliable shelters that balance protection and connection to nature

  • Coordinate food resupplies carefully in isolated areas

  • Value teamwork and friendship as key to overcoming obstacles

Their story encourages others to explore the Maine part of the Appalachian Trail and discover the rewards of shared outdoor experiences.
